Neuwied on the banks of the River Rhine and close to the UNESCO world heritage site "Middle Rhine Valley" is a vibrant town, which celebrated its 350th anniversary in 2003. It is the birthplace of Princess Elisabeth of Wied (Queen of Romania), who wrote poetry under the pseudonym of Carmen Sylva. The palace in the town centre is still owned and inhabited by the Wied family. The writer and art critic Carl Einstein, the doctor and author Friedrich Wolf, and the world famous cabinet-maker David Roentgen were also born in Neuwied. It is the town where Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen, founder of the German co-operative movement, lived and worked, and where English students came to live and learn at the highly respected Moravian boarding school. The iron works of Rasselstein, in its present shape still one of the biggest companies in Neuwied, supplied the rails for the first railway in Germany in 1835.
